linkspam fun and joy
I am having a not entirely pleasant day, ergo, linkspam.

I'm sure some of you have already seen this marvelous essay, posted by [info]sarahbrand , but have you seen these steampunk Star Wars drawings?  And how about these pictures of newly-discovered species in the Mekong Delta?  (or this giant pink lizard in the Galapagos which somehow was never accounted for until just recently?)  For the Doctor Who fans, how about the Bayeux Tardis

Historically speaking, here is a page on the Shinsengumi, a special police force in Kyoto at the time of the Bakumatsu (the turnover period between the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Emperor), and if you don't specially like Japanese history, (you lunatic), here is a page full of crazy details about the very crazy forms of proper address in the English peerage.

And this is eigenfactor, which is one of my research professor's pet projects.  It is insane and makes my head hurt, but also it is awesome: the basic idea is that it is a map of how parts of science connect to other parts, which is a trendy idea right now - but most people just go for pretty spiderwebs and don't consider whether or not it tells you useful information.  Eigenfactor is supposed to address that.

So what cool links do you have squirrelled away for a rainy day, in case you find just the right person to throw them at?  Funny things (Arnold Chrysler and the 40,000 stolen hotel coat hangers!), or amazing science things (kleptoplast photosynthetic sea slugs), or angry essays (racefail, Earthsea movie), or beautiful pictures (the northern lights in Iceland) - whatever.  Send me your spare linkage!

You're my favorite; I love you.

(...look at all this purple in your post I see. Did I mention... ^^ 'Cos yeah.)

Here is an adorable v unusual BBC article and surely you know the steampunk home quite well, right? I think so. And a very sad personal essay about racist abuse of middle-school-age kids from Racialicious.

Reference pictures for art, complete with a slideshow of photographs on the home page many of which are neat and/or quite gorgeous. A steampunk font collection, cool perhaps to look at even if you do not want to d/l fonts. Tetris is helpful for some, apparently! If all the things you said, yes, guess it unsurprisingly depends. xp Uh. Also the Milky Way, it is Very Very Big, not just Very Big.

This is one of the many awesome texts that that apparently-boring professor is using for that very-cool-sounding class I told you about, if you feel like reading about politics and gangster activity in Southeast Asia. I really like pictures of nebulae because ohhhh wow. This is the Balinese script - it really makes me want to learn it, even though Balinese is not precisely the most widely-spoken language in Indonesia (I know you're so shocked about both these things). And here is a photo essay on Indonesia's elections (I have something to seeeeend you, too. That was the wrong syllable elongated. O well). Origins of shadow puppet theatre around the world, just because. Niftyish. Apparently, Chinese writing is much older than was originally thought - srry for the, er, theme of sorts in bits of these; you know me. But I linked what I thought you might like.

(Oh look. This is an age-old saved link (read: 2007), but species found in Suriname still cool so maybe you will like to look at again 'cos - look at that! - even though I think I actually remember discussing it with you specifically.)

A baby moose fell through a window in Washington; watch out, dear! o.O. And did you hear about PETA's campaign to call fish 'sea kittens'?

Look at this gorgeous picture and it is called the Christmas Tree cluster - but also "sprinking of stars" is so - you know?

I found something just recently for which I was like !!!! zomg! but I can't find where I put the link - but obviously updates forthcome, since hi.

Obviously you have this link and surely at a ready click, but I thought you could use it easily here in front of you: lalaLA.

And finally, for, uh, fond memories.
