Okay.

Invertebrate paleontology vs. post-WWII Japan.

Discuss.

Japan! Because I had a good history experience last quarter, and I'm all history-happy and want to spread the joy.

I'd quote at you what you said about the high schools, but I'm too tired to find it.

(On the other hand, invertebrate paleontology.)

I have no worthwhile input - I only know what I would do, which doesn't really help you - but I sympathize with class-related dilemmas.

They found a fossil octopus. It's one of less than ten. FOSSIL OCTOPUS. And you'll get to geek out a lot about the Burgess Shale. If there's a field trip, I will distance-kill you with envy. Not as good as live invertebrates, probably way better than a plant paleo course.

Went to invertebrate class; first ten minutes spent in deep lust of OH GOD I WANT TO KNOW THESE THINGS. Next forty spent in horror as I discovered how dull the lecturer is. Even now am trying to convince myself that surely I overestimated said dullness, but I don't think I did. Dammit.

So, Japan.

Also have had thoughts on story I sent you ages ago. Owe you many things, not least of which a letter, but at some point in future would you mind taking a gander?

There are better ways to become a fossil invertebrate geek. Speaking of, we have an excellent Devonian fossil gorge here. Fresh-scoured last June.

Yeah, my feeling was that if I would have a more interesting time reading textbooks than listening to him, then I was probably best off doing that - especially since it looks like chiefly an anatomy course, and my other two are physiology (beaucoup memorization) and Chinese (memorization until it comes out of my ears).

I have fond memories of plant anatomy and physiology, but that's because I do pretty well with read-and-recall tests. And I like all the lovely Greek and Latin words. My animal physiology class involved one of many stupid brain tricks, specifically the one to keep me awake and taking notes-- pulling a bit of fuzz from my sweater and sticking it on the end of my pen so I got a swoopy calligraphy thing sometimes. I wanted to keep making the pretties, so I kept writing, and why not write down the lecture?

That course was better for having a student-led lab (in which I drew the inside of a fish unconsciously while talking) and my favorite final yet: write your own question and answer it. Two pages, max.
